The next major impact on consumers relating to the Affordable Care Act will be January 1, 2014 when all citizens will be required to purchase health insurance coverage or pay a Shared Responsibility Payment (penalty) tax to the Internal Revenue Service.   Consumers may purchase insurance coverage from the private market, like today, or through the public Government Exchange.

The initial Open Enrollment for the new essential health plans offered  by  the Government Exchange market will began on October 1, 2013 and extend through March 31, 2014.    The earilest effective date for coverage offered by the Government Exchange will be January 1, 2014.
